According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July are the most common times of the year for fireworks injuries. While there are generally a variety of public fireworks displays to choose from, many people prefer to buy and set off their own. In planning your own display, remember to use extreme caution. Fireworks are explosive devices, and can cause serious injuries and even death. Common fireworks related injuries include burns, cuts and lacerations, and eye injuries. The CDC recommends following these safety tips when setting off fireworks:

• Do not allow young children to play with or set off fireworks
• Be careful, the fireworks you buy are meant for private not public displays
• Make sure fireworks are safely and properly positioned before lighting
• Keep a safe distance from any fireworks display you are viewing
• Have a water source handy in the event of fire

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. If you plan on drinking this New Year’s Eve, either do not set off fireworks or put a sober person in charge of lighting them. Call 911 immediately if there are any injuries.

South Carolina Laws Regarding Fireworks

The South Carolina Board of Pyrotechnic Safety regulates the sale and use of fireworks in the state. While any resident over the age of 16 is permitted to buy fireworks, setting them off is another story.
