New Car In Your Future? Don’t Miss These Top Car Safety Features

December 11, 2017 by Anastopoulo Law Firm

Automotive manufacturers have come a long way over the past decade when it comes to implementing technologies that can help prevent car accidents and injuries. Newer cars now feature a slew of advanced functions that either come standard or as options. The following are some of the top car safety features to look for if you are buying a new car in 2018.

Automated Driving Systems

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 37,000 people were killed in car accidents over 2016, the majority of which were the result of driver error. Automated driving systems (ADS), otherwise known as self-driving cars, have been in development for the past few years. After being introduced through companies such as Uber, they are now being offered on consumer vehicles, such as Cadillac’s new CT6 sedan.

Auto Steering

Forbes reports that both Lexus and Volvo are inching towards automated driving, with a steering system that can help you avoid hitting vehicles, curbs, or even pedestrians in your path. Through sensors and an advanced automotive communication system, this technology allows the car to basically take over the steering wheel. This just one of the top car safety features that can help avoid head-on collisions, one of the most deadly types of car accidents.

Emergency Braking Systems

US News and World Report claims that emergency braking systems are now available in a broad range of vehicles, in a variety of price ranges.  This allows your vehicle to automatically apply the brakes when it senses an approaching collision. Crash imminent braking (CIB) can at least slow, if not completely stop, your car, reducing the potential for severe injuries. Pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB) systems are another emerging feature, relying on a combination of sensors and cameras to detect people in your path.

Lane Assist

Another NHTSA approved safety technology that is being promoted heavily in new vehicles is lane assist features, which can help alert you if your car drifts from its lane. It relies on a camera to view and decipher road markings, sending out audio and visual messages when a driver is in danger. This can help prevent side swiping incidents, along with providing advanced warning of potential rollover accidents.

Blind Spot Detection

Blind spots around trucks and passenger vehicles, in which other vehicles often go unnoticed by drivers, are another common factor in crashes and collisions. Dashboard cameras, sensors, and monitoring systems can alert drivers and help prevent these accidents from occurring.
